This study provides a comparative analysis of patent activity related to hydrogen technologies in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico, with a focus on hydrogen production, storage and end-use applications. Based on an initial dataset of 495 patent applications, the study examines the legal status, technological scope and ownership structure of hydrogen-related patents in the selected jurisdictions. The findings show that patenting activity in the region is highly concentrated in foreign companies, with limited participation by local firms, universities and research institutions. While Latin America has significant potential to become a major producer of green hydrogen, the patent landscape suggests the region currently plays a more limited role in developing and owning the key technologies that will shape the hydrogen economy.
