Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research

SFB / TRR 190

Within the collaborative research center “Sonderforschungsbereich/Transregio 190 Rationality and Competition” funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition is represented with the sub-project B04. The sub-project investigates the economic decisions taken by SMEs, in particular those related to innovation activities. The special research project has been granted funding from the DFG until 2020 , which has been extended until 2023. The project is carried out in cooperation with the LMU Munich, HU Berlin, TU Berlin, ifo Institute, European School of Management and Technology, the DIW Berlin, and the Berlin Social Science Center.

Project B04 studies innovation by small and medium sized firms (SMEs) using novel data sets that allow exploring the causal effects of different types of innovation constraints. The project contrasts neoclassical and behavioral explanations of SME innovation activities to investigate their contribution to outcomes in different competitive market environments. Theoretical predictions about (possibly non-standard) preferences and expectations of decision makers in owner-managed as opposed to non-owner-managed firms are developed and then tested using data, elicited in experiments and surveys, on preferences and beliefs held by owner- and employee-managers.
