Data Access

The department for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition makes own research data, to the extent possible, available to external researchers. Data can be accessed either locally at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Marstallplatz 1, 80539 Munich, Room 314, or remotely, within the scope of open access publications in the online data repository on our website (see below).

Data Room

The data room is open to researchers by appointment only. If you are interested, please contact the assistant to the director Gisela Stingl. Our research data can only be accessed after receipt of the signed formal obligation for data use and approval of the research proposal. An English summary will be provided upon request. However, external researchers have to fill in and sign the legally binding German form.

We provide the following data sets:

PatVal1-EU Survey Dataset

Large-scale and representative survey data of 9,216 European inventors, conducted from May 2003 to January 2004, corresponding to 9,017 patents granted at the EPO with priority date in 1993-1997 from all technological fields located in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. Data covers inter alia information about the economic value and use of the patents, characteristics of the inventors, knowledge flows, and the process that led to the invention.

Clean Tech Inventors Survey and Patent Dataset

Survey and EP patent data of 1,931 German-based inventors active in Clean Technology, Nanotechnology, and Mechanical Elements. Data can be used for analyzing effects of human capital accumulation and inventor network on inventive performance. Additionally, aggregate data of patent transfers is provided.

Patent Litigation Dataset

Case-level data gathered from patent infringement cases at German regional courts and patent revocation cases at the German Federal Patent Court filed during the period 2000–2008. Data include detailed information on litigants, judges, the proceeding, and the underlying patent.

Patent Transfers Dataset

Data on pre- and post-grant ownership information changes of European bundle patents between 1981 and 2014 originating primarily from the registers of the European Patent Office and the German Federal Patent and Trademark Office. Data include information on current and all prior right holders in terms of name, country, and address, as well as the date of change for each patent. Ownership information changes are classified according to a newly developed taxonomy of patent transfe
