Individuen und Organisationen verfolgen Innovation aus unterschiedlichen Gründen und in unterschiedlichen Formen. Die Untersuchungen in diesem Forschungsfeld sind darauf ausgerichtet, Motive und Verhalten, die zu innovativen Ergebnissen führen, zu verstehen. Einige der beobachteten Verhaltensweisen sind nicht mit klassischen Verhaltensannahmen der Wirtschaftswissenschaften vereinbar und daher von besonderem Interesse. Um ein verbessertes Verständnis von innovationsauslösenden Faktoren zu erhalten, werden Innovationsmotive und Innovationsverhalten auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen (z.B. Individuum, Team, Organisation, Region etc.) untersucht. Dabei wird unter anderem auf das Experimentallabor econlab zurückgegriffen.
